WHAT IS A MENTOR?
Men-tor (men’tor’, -ter). A wise and trusted counselor or teacher: An instructor, encourager, advocate, guide, coach, tutor and a teacher.
Parents, community members and business personnel are encouraged to become a Miller Mentor in this school based mentor program ONLY 30 MINUTES ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN A CHILD'S LIFE! Local businesses are encouraged to allow their employees an hour a week to help a child.
Many businesses last year including Canadian State Bank, Yukon National Bank, Yukon fire fighters and Yukon police officers became and mentors and friends to many Yukon Elementary students. They understand that the gift of sharing time and their expertise is time well spend with the future of tomorrow – our children.
Students needing to have a mentor are identified by counselors and teachers in our schools. Parents may also request a mentor for their child. Mentors are encouraged to share self-esteem building, help with reading, play games with students and generally just be a friend. Please take the time to give back. You will receive as much if not more than you will give.
OBJECTIVES OF THE MENTOR PROGRAM:
Mentors will serve as role models and tutors providing academic and social support to empower and motivate students to succeed.
Mentors will boost self-confidence and self esteem.
Mentors provide academic support, assistance and guidance.
Mentoring facilitates mutually beneficial relations between mentor and student.
The mentoring process involves the community and the school working together to empower students.
THE MENTOR'S ROLE:
Being a mentor is meant to be a successful and positive experience for both student and mentor. Occasionally a mentor/student relationship just doesn’t work out because of personality conflict. Please let the principal, the counselor or Helping Hand Coordinator know immediately. We will work it out.
Many students do not spend even thirty minutes a week talking with an adult. The sixty minutes you spend with your student is very important. It is important for mentors to be good listeners and help the student to express feeling and opinions with confidence. Your mentoring relationship can greatly increase the student’s sense of security and self-confidence thus building their self-esteem.
