Elementary ELA/Reading Curriculum

Yukon Public Schools recognizes that all students must read and comprehend a broad range of complex written, visual and electronic texts. In addition, students must be able to craft written arguments, explain processes and express themselves through writing and speaking to develop a strong academic foundation for lifelong learning and achieve success as a 21st century citizen.

Our goal is to provide the following foundation of resources for our elementary program:

  • A comprehensive literacy program featuring a wide variety of engaging literature resources, targeted skill instruction in reading and writing, and support services including reading specialists, literacy coaches, and differentiated instruction.

  • Ongoing assessment using Literacy First and Renaissance STAR Reading to ensure that classroom instruction is directed to specific skills that each student needs.

  • Media centers which support the total academic program through extensive collections of materials for students’ use.

Pre-school:

Our pre-school classes embed language arts into daily classroom centers and routines using the Zoo-phonics® program of instruction.  Research shows that learning through play is essential for young children. Students are exposed to literacy as they play in centers with dramatic play, building blocks, puppets, art and classroom library areas.

Zoo-phonics® is a method developed to make children strong readers and spellers using a “phono” (hearing), “oral” (speaking), “visual” (seeing), “kinesthetic” (moving), and tactile (touching)—whole brain approach. Students actually learn the sounds of the alphabet and advanced phonemic concepts through an easily understood, concrete method of presentation. Using animals drawn in the shapes of letters for ease of memory and related body movements for each letter to cement sounds to the shapes of letters, this curriculum provides a springboard for all other academia including math, art, music, social studies, science and physical education.

Kindergarten-5th Grade:

Yukon Public School instructors develop strong readers by implementing the Balanced Literacy Model. This model focuses instruction on reading, writing, and word study in whole group, small group and individual settings.Throughout instruction, students are assessed on their individual reading skill level so teachers can focus on a particular skill or strategy to meet student needs.

Literacy - Yukon Public Schools has adopted the Literacy First model as a means to assess and differentiate instruction for all elementary students. Literacy First is a research-based and state adopted assessment that focuses on specific phonological, phonics, fluency and comprehension skills. Teachers also incorporate a basal reading series and other literature resources as well as writing and vocabulary instruction into their reading block.

Writing – Yukon Public Schools is transitioning to the 6+1 Traits® Writing Model of Instruction & Assessment which comprises 6+1 key qualities that define quality writing.  These are:

  • Ideas – the main message

  • Organization – the internal structure of the piece

  • Voice – the personal tone and flavor of the author’s message

  • Word Choice – the vocabulary a writer chooses to convey meaning

  • Sentence Fluency – the rhythm and flow of the language

  • Conventions – the mechanical correctness

  • Presentation – how the writing actually looks on the page

This model of instruction and assessment aligns with the state rubric for the 5th grade writing assessments in Oklahoma.
