The Yukon Miller Re-Cap of 2007-2008
Another successful wrestling team goes down in the books for the Yukon Millers. The dual meet season compiled a 12-2 record as they became Back-To-Back Metro Conference Champions. Time will only tell just how great this Miller wrestling program will get. Not only did the High School win their conference, but the Junior High went 9-0 in duals and also became the Metro Conference Champions for the first time in Miller History. Coach Schneider thanks all who have helped including his two new assistant coaches, Brock Moore and Adam Jewell for their added guidance and dedication of time and efforts toward the program. The Takedown Club also gave the wrestlers what they needed to be successful and without them the program would suffer. Also thank you to the many individuals who gave donations or contributions to the team throughout the year. Our web page is looking great, thanks John Vestal. “Coach Moore knows a great deal of moves and stressed to our wrestlers about being in position at all times. Coach Jewell did a great job with our conditioning and strength aspects,” stated Schneider. The High School team started their journey to success traveling to Ark City, KS for their opening tournament. Yukon was able to take two full squads to the tournament and compete. The Varsity-Red squad brought home the bronze trophy with eleven out of fourteen guys bringing home placement points. Cameron Wells 119lbs. and Dante Campbell 215lbs. were both individual champions at their respective weights. This type of success only became contagious as the Millers were crowned Team Champions at the Putnam City Tournament just two weeks later. Twelve out of Fourteen wrestlers brought home individual medals and two, Cameron Wells 119lbs. and Corey Duncan 135lbs. were crowned champions. Just after the winter break the team traveled to Tulsa for the annual Jenks Tournament. Again the team was awarded the third place trophy for their group effort, and again twelve wrestlers received individual medals. Cameron Wells was the only one who not only reached the finals, but scored a 19-6 major decision over his opponent to bring home the gold.| The 32nd annual Jay Hancock tournament, which Yukon hosts, was a very exciting tournament to be a part of. Not only do the parents of wrestlers get involved, but the entire community plays a huge part in the undertaking of this tournament. Donations from local restaurants and banks for food and drinks was a great help as well as those who signed up to work a table, all made this a terrific tournament for the town of Yukon. The wrestlers did their very best as far as gaining bonus points throughout the tournament, but when it was all through they still fell short to team champions Del-City and runner-up Sand Springs. The Millers were again recipients of the third place team trophy. Nine wrestlers came away with medals while Mike Thomas 171lbs. went away knowing that he was most dominate in his weight class as he received the gold. Trying to gain as much momentum for the finish the Regional Tournament didn’t seem to go the way most of the wrestlers would have liked. Yukon finished in sixth place as a team and had only three wrestlers place in the top four, which guaranteed a State Qualifying spot. Cory Duncan 130lbs. reached the finals only to lose a close 7-4 match. Cameron Wells 119lbs. and Sam Hildebrand 160lbs. both brought home 3rd place and gave them a chance to wrestle at the State Championships. Mike Thomas 171lbs. and Dante Campbell 215lbs. both finished in 5th place as an alternate for the state tournament. Corey Duncan wrestled some very tough matches at the State Tournament and came away with a 4th place finish in the State. Both Cameron and Sam couldn’t seem to get things going and finished their season knowing that next year will be the year for them. “All in all I think our guys did a great job. It’s hard to measure a team’s success just by the way you finish at the regionals or the State Tournament. I know these are great young men have a taste for success and are willing to do just about anything to get it. Our team is traveling to Lincoln Neb. for a team camp over the summer which will definitely help our chances for future success at this program. One other great aspect of this team is that we only had two senior wrestlers in the varsity spots. I look for great things to come and congratulate those who have been a part of this year’s success.” Coach Schneider |
