The Yukon High School Varsity Pom Pon squad attended UDA dance camp at OU recently, and brought home numerous awards. The squad earned a blue ribbon and placed second on the "home routine" they performed the first night of camp. They earned a Superior trophy on the "team dance", which was a routine taught to each of the squads during camp. The squad also earned a Full Out trophy for excellent choreography, skills and techniques, and earned a spirit stick each of the four days of camp.
Individually, the squad members learned two additional dances in either hip hop levels 1 or 2, or jazz levels 2 or 4, and performed them on the last day of camp. Based on the performance of the dances, squad members were awarded either a blue, red or white ribbon, and YHS squad members earned a total of 33 blue ribbons and 3 red ribbons.
Each day of camp, UDA staff led the participants in drill downs, which are military commands to improve discipline and listening skills. Squad members earned a total of 25 drill down ribbons over the four days, the most ever earned by YHS pom.
The coaches and sponsors were given 6 specialty ribbons to award squad members who went above and beyond what was expected. Recipients of the specialty ribbons were: Courtney Witte and Lauren Wylie for leadership; Riki Sills for technique; Casey Crawford for improvement; and Lyndsey Kean and Cady Sheets for accomplishment.
