    BULLYING

Bullying is a topic that is addressed in guidance class in November.  Students are given a survey that identifies types of bullying and when and where the bullying occurs.  This information helps teachers and the principal know how to address this issue.  The students are also strongly encouraged to let school staff know if bullying is taking place so that we can do something about it.  In guidance class, students are also taught strategies to deal with bullying.  Below are ways that you can help your child:

If Your Child is Being Bullied…

    • Listen to your child.
    • Talk to your child about what makes people act like bullies.
    • Review options with your child.  Teach a bully-proofing strategy and rehearse that strategy with your child.
    • Encourage other friendships.
    • Remember that your child’s self-confidence needs boosting.

    Bully-Proofing Strategies

    • Assert yourself.  Tell the bully to stop.
    • Question the response.  “Why would you say that and hurt my feelings?”
    • Use “I want”.  “I want you to stop teasing me.”
    • Agree with the teaser.  “Hey four eyes.”  “You’re right, my eyesight is poor.”
    • Use humor as a response.  “You don’t say.”  “Thanks for telling me.”  “So.”
    • Use the C.A.L.M. approach:  C-cool down, A-assert yourself, L-look at the teaser straight in the eye, M-mean what you say
    • Seek help from school.
