5th Grade Writing Test

All fifth graders will be taking part in the writing test on February 20, 2008. This is a state mandated test for all fifth grade students in the state of Oklahoma. Attendance on this day is very important. The fifth grade teachers have been working hard and creatively to prepare the students for this upcoming test. Please be encouraging to your child regarding the test and doing well in school during these winter months.

Conflict Resolution

In guidance class, students have been learning about problem solving and how to deal with conflicts. They have learned the S.T.A.R. method of conflict resolution. S.Stop, T.Think, A.Act, and R.Review are steps that students can use to help them peacefully deal with conflicts between themselves and others. The students are taught to:
S.Stop: Stop and calm down. Breathe deeply, count to 10, relax your muscles or remove yourself from the situation in order to calm your body down and be able to think clearly. When students are in a state of anger, they are not able to think clearly in order to solve problems.

S. STOP is a very important step in problem solving.

T. Think: Think about how you can solve this problem. What are your options? Is it worth it? Should I ignore it, use my words, or get adult help? Brainstorm or list possible solutions and pick the best one.

A. Act: Choose a solution and act on it.

R. Review: Did it work? Was the problem resolved? Was it a win-win situation? If the problem wasn’t solved, what can I do differently? Choose another solution and act on it.
Using these steps will help students develop problem solving skills and learn how to handle conflicts peacefully.

Central Students Care

Central students had the opportunity to show just how much they do care about others in the community. They participated in a couple of service projects during the month of December. Students wore hats for Hat Day to help raise money for a needy family in the community. The high school students sponsored this event. Students also participated in the toy drive for the community. This year the ice storm affected the number of donations in Yukon, but Central students came through and donated many items for the community. Central students are always so giving and caring.

Life Principles

Life Principles are taught monthly at Central. These life principles are taught to help students with their character development. The life principle for the winter months are perseverance (January) and loyalty (February). Please encourage your students to display these life principles. Notice when they are displaying perseverance and loyalty and encourage them to keep doing so. Examples: “I like the way you showed perseverance by reading to meet your AR goal.”
