Myers Elementary

Learn and Serve Grant

Myers Elementary in Yukon received a grant for $3,500 from a partnership between the State Department of Oklahoma and Learn and Serve Oklahoma. These grants are designed for promoting the learning concept of aligning academic PASS objectives with student driven service projects.

At Myers, students are incorporating the problem-solving process into improving awareness of their feelings. Students are also challenged to utilize the process when presented with situations at school involving anger and making positive choices.

The grant initially targeted 5th grade students here at Myers. These students learned four steps involved in solving problems. The students brainstormed how the information they learned could be used to help others. Working in groups, the students developed posters, anger “toolbox kits”, a video, just Stop and Think stickers, along with presentations designed for their parents and other students.

The grant allows the opportunity for renewal for up to three years. Partnerships with community partners, civic organizations, and volunteers are a vital part of the grant success. Future projects include landscape projects with the Yukon 4-H club, walking activities within the Myers community and expanding learning of effective problem-solving.
