Dancing and Sculpting in Alternative School
Waltzing and salsa, or sculpting and painting are just some of the weekly activities happening at the Yukon Alternative School. The Oklahoma Arts Council generously awarded a $5000 grant to the Yukon Alternative School through the Alternative Education Arts Grant Program for the 2008-2009 school-year. This has provided an excellent opportunity to incorporate Fine Arts into the curriculum along with physical exercise. The overall goal for this project includes two components. The first is to introduce the
students to non-verbal communication through creative dance in order to increase confidence, self-esteem, and awareness of body language. The second is to involve the students in a variety of hand-built ceramics and sculpture projects in order to express creativity and develop artistic talent. Finding new and challenging ways of teaching is just part of the trend of Alternative Schools across the state. At Yukon Alternative, we are always working on enriching and developing our curriculum to meet the needs of our students.
